Prioritize Parents in the Virginia Budget

During the final budget negotiations, lawmakers have an opportunity to advance policies that provide targeted support for families and preserve our shared resources for critical investments in the long term. Virginia lawmakers can and should prioritize parents and families.

I’m writing to ask you to prioritize parents and families in the Virginia budget.

Virginia lawmakers are making final decisions on Virginia’s budget right now. Virginia parents are calling for a budget that prioritizes parents and our next generation by doing three things:

- Increase investments in K-12 education to make sure our students are learning in a safe and healthy environment and where they are supported academically, socially, and emotionally;
- Provide economic relief through one-time tax rebates targeted to parents;
- Make the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) fully refundable to help families who are living paycheck to paycheck.

Everyone in Virginia — no matter what they look like or how much is in their wallet — should have an opportunity to build a fulfilling life. Tax proposals that leave out families who need economic relief the most undermine that opportunity. Virginia lawmakers should prioritize parents and advance policies that provide economic support to those who need it most.

Targeted tax policy choices — like improving the Earned Income Tax Credit — would give families struggling to make ends meet the needed flexibility to use the income in the ways that best help their household. This means rent, diapers, medicine, clothing, bus fare, school supplies, utility payments, car repairs, and more.

We need YOU to prioritize parents in the Virginia budget and advance policies that provide economic support.
