Tell Governor Northam: Sign the minimum wage bill now

In the midst of a crisis, business interests are lobbying the Governor to undo our hard work and gut the bill to raise the minimum wage. They’re asking the Governor to push back wage increases or even to lower the amount. Minimum wage workers are making sure we have essential supplies and caring for our families during this pandemic. They deserve to be paid fairly. Email the Governor now and ask him to sign the minimum wage bill without amendments that hurt working families.

I’m writing to ask you to sign Virginia’s minimum wage increase bill into law without adding amendments that would hurt Virginia’s working families, such as pushing back the timeline or lowering the amount of the raise.

Raising the minimum wage would help close the wage gap and give a boost to working families struggling to help their kids get ahead, lifting them out of poverty. Under SB7 and HB395, the first wage increase is scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2021. Increased wages in the hands of working families right when our economy is struggling to recover from this pandemic translates into more dollars spent back in our local communities.

Over 800,000 Virginians will benefit from an increase in the minimum wage, many of who are currently performing essential tasks that are keeping our communities safe and healthy in the midst of this pandemic. It’s never been more clear that low-wage workers are core to our communities. They deserve to be paid fairly.

Please sign SB7 and HB395 immediately without amendments that could delay or decrease wages for hundreds of thousands of Virginians who deserve a raise.
