Defund the Police. Fund Black Futures in Virginia

The Virginia General Assembly is convening on August 18 to take on criminal justice reform in the Commonwealth. Your legislators need to hear that you support reforms aimed at reducing police budgets and holding police more accountable in Virginia!

When the General Assembly convenes for special session on August 18, I'm asking you to vote in favor of bold police reforms in Virginia. It's undeniable that Black people experience police violence more than white people. That's unacceptable.

According to a recent poll, a majority of Virginians support major policing reforms. We can overhaul our model of policing to create stronger, safer communities where Black Americans can live freely and securely.

I'm asking you to support:

--Shifting responsibilities and accompanying funding away from police as first responders when dealing with issues like mental health, addiction, and homelessness 
--Ending the practice of qualified immunity for police officers, which allows them to avoid accountability to victims in civil court 
--Establishing independent civilian oversight of police departments and requiring external investigation with mandated reprimanding for abuse or misconduct
--Increasing training standards and requirements for police officers, including training on bias and profiling, and raising the level of qualification to become a police officer.
--Defelonizing assault on a law enforcement officer
