We need individuals to show up in Richmond to the Senate Privileges and Elections Hearing on January 14, 2025 at the General Assembly Building, Senate Room B, Room 306 in support of Constitutional Amendment SJ 2. The hearing is scheduled to be held 15 minutes after the floor adjourns. You will need to be prepared to go through security. Can’t show up in person? The Virginia Right to Vote Coalition is composed of multiple state-based and national organizations, who are working towards the goal of having clear, consistent and fair re-enfranchisement in Virginia’s constitution for eligible voters by 2026. Our respective organizations represent a vast majority of the Commonwealth and represent various advocacy organizations, directly impacted Virginians, disability advocates, educational institutions, re-entry organizations, voting rights advocates. Like the majority of Virginians, we believe that all qualified citizens should have access to the ballot, including those who have served their time for felony convictions and people with disabilities who want to participate in the democratic process. We support an amendment to the Virginia Constitution to guarantee that people who have been disenfranchised due to a felony conviction will have their rights automatically restored upon completion of their sentences, without additional steps or paperwork after they are no longer incarcerated, and to ensure people with disabilities never lose their rights without an appropriate judicial finding.

Both Democratic and Republican governors have chosen to restore voting rights to thousands of citizens; however, Virginia's current governor has reversed the trend. People should not be permanently defined by their past mistakes.

Virginians who have successfully served their time should be able to fully rejoin civic life. It is time for Virginians to act to amend our Constitution to create a routine restoration process that reflects fair accountability and encourages civic engagement.
