Support Safe Communities By Ending Qualified Immunity

We must come together to end qualified immunity so that police officers can be held accountable for their actions and everyone, regardless of the color of their skin, has equal protection under the law. The House XX committee is meeting to vote on HBXX that would end qualified immunity in Virginia! Tell your Delegate to make police accountable in the Commonwealth!

The House X committee is considering a bill that would end qualified immunity in Virginia. I'm writing to ask you to end qualified immunity in Virginia by voting for HBXX.

Everyone, Black, Brown, and white alike, should feel safe and protected in their communities.  But when police officers can use excessive force on anyone at any time with impunity, no one can feel safe. This is especially true for Black and Brown members of our community, who are more likely to be targeted by police officers. We must come together to end qualified immunity so that police officers can be held accountable for their actions and everyone, regardless of the color of their skin, has equal protection under the law.

Over their lifetimes, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be killed by police. Black men are about 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police over their lifetime than white men.

According to Reuters, since 2005, courts have been increasingly reluctant to rule in favor of the victims in cases of police brutality, essentially granting police officers immunity. Reuters identified more than three dozen cases where officers had committed unlawful acts, but were given immunity anyway. Multiple states, including Maryland, Connecticut, and Colorado, have enacted legislation that would end qualified immunity in their states.

Virginia voters support ending the practice of qualified immunity for police by a margin of +23%, including 54% of all registered voters.

Qualified immunity makes all of us less safe. If police can’t be held accountable for their actions, anyone can be a victim at any time. If we end qualified immunity, police officers will think before they act violently against members of our community.
