Support Safe Communities By Ending Qualified Immunity

We must come together to end qualified immunity so that police officers can be held accountable for their actions and everyone, regardless of the color of their skin, has equal protection under the law. Tell your legislator to make police accountable in the Commonwealth!

I'm writing to ask you to end qualified immunity in Virginia.

Everyone, Black, Brown, and white alike, should feel safe and protected in their communities.  But when police officers can use excessive force on anyone at any time with impunity, no one can feel safe. Black and Brown members of our community, who are more likely to be targeted by police officers, feel especially unsafe. We must come together to end qualified immunity so that police officers can be held accountable for their actions. Everyone, regardless of the color of their skin, must have equal protection under the law.

According to a study from the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, 1 in every 1,000 Black men can expect to be killed by police. Black men are about 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police over their lifetimes than white men.

A survey of Virginia voters by the Public Policy Polling firm in September of 2020, says that a majority of voters support ending the practice of qualified immunity for police by a margin of +23%, including 54% of all registered voters.

Qualified immunity makes all of us less safe. If police officers can’t be held accountable for their actions, anyone can be a victim at any time. If we end qualified immunity, police officers will think before they act violently against members of our community.
